How to Style a Terrace Reception at the Exploratorium
Few event spaces in San Francisco can compete with the terrace at the Exploratorium. Set above the Bay at Pier 15, it frames the Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island and the city skyline in a single view. It's a natural fit for corporate receptions, conference after-parties and happy hours. Thoughtful modern event furniture rentals create comfortable places to gather while keeping the waterfront view open. Here's how we approach styling it, based on our experience furnishing events at the Exploratorium and across the San Francisco waterfront.

1. Start with the view
Let the Bay remain the focal point while arranging sofas and lounge chairs for conversation. Angle lounge groupings to suit the entrance, guest flow and views, and place taller pieces along the edges. In this concept, the bar and back bar sit by the glass wall, with dining tables in the middle and lounge seating to the right.
2. Create zones, not rows
A thoughtful terrace layout gives guests a few different ways to enjoy the event. We typically plan three zones:
- Lounge groupings with a sofa, two lounge chairs and a coffee table, where guests can sit and talk.
- Highboys and barstools along the railing, where people naturally gather to take in the view with a drink.
- Dining or café tables for guests who want to sit down with food.
Just as important is what you leave empty. Wide walkways and open floor space keep the terrace from feeling cluttered and give caterers and guests room to move.
3. Choose a palette that suits the setting
The terrace is surrounded by water, sky and gray architecture, so a light, coastal palette works beautifully. In this concept we paired light oak, cream and soft blue: a cream channel-tufted sofa, soft blue lounge chairs with oak legs, fluted oak coffee tables with white tops, cream bouclé barstools and blue café chairs. The warm wood softens the concrete, and the blues echo the Bay without competing with it.
4. Bring in greenery
An open terrace can feel stark, and plants change that instantly. Large monstera and bird of paradise plants in simple concrete or white planters frame each seating area, add height at the edges of the space and make the terrace feel like an outdoor living room.
5. Plan for San Francisco waterfront weather
The view comes with wind, sun and the occasional fog bank. A few things help:
- Choose sturdy, substantial furniture over lightweight pieces that can shift in the wind.
- Keep tabletop decor low and secure, and use heavy planters.
- Consider timing. Check sun exposure during your event hours, and plan for cooler temperatures as the day progresses.
- Face lounge seating so guests aren't staring directly into the sun during your event hours.
6. Work with a vendor who knows the venue
Terrace events involve careful coordination of delivery, load-in, setup and strike with the venue's event team and your other vendors. Novo Studio has furnished events at the Exploratorium and is on its vendor list, so we can plan a layout that fits the space and coordinate logistics smoothly.
